Hello!

July 10, 2024

What's up. I'm Josh.. I'm an engineer who loves personal finance. I'm also a data hoarder who has tracked every cent I and now my family has spent over the last 12 years.

I've used lots of tools... starting with a spreadsheet, then YNAB 4, then Beancount, then back to YNAB. I've also played with most other apps out there along the way.

And?

I feel like it's taken pretty much all of those 12 years since I started to care about my finances to get on the same page as my wife about spending. Given my tendency to over-engineer everything, I think the majority of that time I've been missing the forest through the trees.

I had this idea for a finance app ~6 months ago that would help people like me, who loves details, to communicate with someone else who is less interested in the minutia using bigger picture numbers. I started out with a spreadsheet, then I built a ghetto web-app using Python-based tools tying into the YNAB API. Then I decided I wanted to build a full web app. So I spent a few months learning Javascript, React, and Next.js, and here we are...

The core concepts from my cobbled together system are working super well with my wife and I, so we'll see if they translate to other people too.

I usually drop my hobbies as fast as I pick them up, so there's a good chance this one dies a slow (or fast) death like the rest of them, but until then, stay tuned!
